For those of you who don’t know much about our adoption process, here are the basics.
Where we’re adopting from:
Ghana, Africa
How many we’re adopting:
One - or at least that’s the plan. We are approved for three, but currently we have the referral of only one child, and we feel very comfortable with that.
Referral/Child info.:
Our referral is a six year old little boy. We are told he speaks some English, & are hoping that some means a lot!
Why a six year old:
Any child up for adoption over the age of three is listed as special needs-strictly because they are older, and older children are less likely to ever be adopted. We specifically wanted a child three or older for that reason.
When we’ll travel:
The U.S. government has approved us for international adoption. We sent all the necessary paperwork (our dossier) to Ghana’s government in February. Typical time frame from sent dossier to travel is one to one & a half months; so possibly late March/early April.
How long we will be in Ghana:
It depends on the efficiency of the court system. We think anywhere from three to six weeks.
Why Ghana:
The short answer is that God sovereignly directed us there. The long answer has to do with a combination of things: length of time compared to other countries, age & marriage restrictions, ease of process, the great need in Africa, etc.
Why Adoption:
We always knew that we would pursue adoption at some point; 'when', has been the only question. Not too long ago, the idea of having children was a distant thought; but God had other plans. Over the past couple of years, God has engineered the circumstances in our life to open our hearts and minds to adoption as our ‘Plan A’.
Conclusion: We’ve realized, we too are adopted - in Christ. And it is our delight to imitate our maker & his love in our quest to start a family.
